Gender pay gaps within more detailed population groups in Canada have not been explored directly, so this study explores differences in mean annual earnings from paid employment between women and men within 11 population groups in Canada.

Description: Previous studies of earnings differences across groups of Canadian-born individuals have used cross-sectional data, leaving unanswered the important question of what earnings differences amount to when measured over workers’ lifecycle. Using data from Statistics Canada’s Longitudinal Worker File and the 1996 and 2001 censuses of population, this study fills this gap and quantifies differences in cumulative earnings—the sum of earnings received over a 20-year period—for four different groups of Canadian-born individuals.

Description: The purpose of this study is to explore the gender pay gap amongst Canadian board directors and officers by looking at various types of compensation. Base pay is the component that does not depend on the individual’s job performance and is mostly determined by an individual’s position and level within a firm’s hierarchy. By contrast, variable pay depends mainly on the individual’s job performance over a given period. As part of variable pay, and to offer a financial incentive, employers can grant equity incentives to board directors and officers in lieu of a higher salary, resulting in lower base pay. This research aims to determine how variable pay explains the gender pay gaps observed among executives in Canada.

Description: Little is known about the workforce utilization of Canadian men with a nursing education, who accounted for 12% of people eligible to practise nursing in 2021 (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2022). This article compares racialized and White men aged 25 to 64 years with a nursing education in terms of their skill utilization in the workforce.

Description: Using data from the Labour Force Survey, this study assesses the degree to which employment and hourly wage rates of unpartnered mothers with young children have caught up to their partnered peers between 1997 and 2023. Focusing on mothers aged 18 to 49 with at least one child aged 5 or younger, the analysis examines differences between partnered (i.e., currently married or living common law) and unpartnered mothers, with disaggregation by unpartnered mothers who have never been married and those who were previously married. The study also examines employment and wage gaps by various diverse groups, such as the experiences of immigrant mothers, as well as Indigenous mothers.
